Hookah smoking is one of the most popular ways of chilling among youth these days. It is considered harmless by the teens as they spend evenings with the smoke and the argument to defend the act as a healthy one. Some would even say that it enhances creativity among its users and other similar unscientific facts.

But as the research and the medical tests suggest that hookah smoking exposes our body to almost the same risk as cigarette smoking, delivering the toxic and addictive drug nicotine to our body.

Norman H. Edelman, senior medical adviser for the American Lung Association says as I quote, “if you examine the stuff they’re inhaling, it’s potent – it’s a lot of bad stuff and many teens believe this is safe, but of course, we know it’s not safe.”

The Mechanism

Also known as narghile, argileh, shisha, hubble-bubble, and goza, Hookah in its fundamental nature is a pot that has water present in it. It assists charcoal-heated air through a tobacco mixture, then through the water-filled chamber and finally through a pipe that acts as the devices’ mouthpiece that allows the user to inhale the vapour. A typical modern hookah has a head (with holes in the bottom), a metal body, a water bowl, and a flexible hose with a mouthpiece. It's available in different flavours, such as apple, mint, cherry, chocolate, coconut, licorice, cappuccino and watermelon.

The Myths & Truths

Includes chemical that contains charcoal: The charcoal used to heat up the tobacco during the making of the smoke adds harmful elements to it like carbon monoxide, tar and an array of chemicals that can cause cancer.

Misconceptions: Hookah is often mistaken as unscathed and less obsessive smoke than cigarettes but the reality is that it leads to short and long-term health hazards. And technically, it appears to deliver more tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide than cigarettes.

Causes cancer: Lung, oral and bladder cancers are caused by the heavy consumption of the hookah smoke.

Other diseases: The person who consumes hookah smoke makes his body vulnerable to heart diseases as the tar consumed, curb and hinder heart’s blood flowing mechanism, increasing the chances of a heart attack. The same mouthpiece is used by a group of people to inhale the smoke, hence multiplying the risks of communicable diseases.

Awareness: Educating the teens about the harmful effects of hookah on the public level so that the word is spread.

Rules: The rules that are often implied on the use of cigarette, should be regulated and standardized on hookah smoking too.

Warnings: The hookah smoke and tobacco should also be disseminated with statutory warnings that are issued on the cigarette packs.

Prohibition: The places where cigarette smoking is banned or not allowed, the similar places should have the collateral rules to be implied on hookah smoking too.

False claims: The unrealistic assertions on the harmlessness of hookah smoking should not be made, it is misleading to the youth.
