At some point of time in everyone’s lives, most of us face an extra stressful situation which shakes us to our core. At those times, having strong coping strategies can make a huge difference.

 

Acknowledge and respect your feelings

“Avoiding your negative emotion may feel like an effective stopgap measure, but in fact it simply postpones, and perhaps escalates and exacerbates, a flood of negative emotion sometime in the future”, said John Duffy, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist.

You may want to ignore the painful feelings the situation brings up or pretend your feelings do not exist. You need to understand that by pushing your feelings away, you create more negative emotions. It’s always better to accept your feelings and work through them. Don’t try to rationalize the way you feel; the only way to work through your emotions is by feeling them. You can also write your feelings. This helps reduce the tension.

Research says that people who spent time writing about a difficult life event has better health and less depression. This is so because writing organizes your thoughts which makes the experience feels less chaotic. Writing also offers an emotional release and an insight into oneself. Therefore, set aside 15 minutes a day for a few days to write about the event and how it made you feel.

 

Share your feelings

Reach out to your friends and let them know what you’re going through. You’ll feel less alone. Talking about your problems helps you better understand your fears and positive feedback from people can make you light and comfortable.

Laughter is as much of an emotional release as crying. There’s always humour to be found in any situation as long as you’re willing to look for it. Give yourself permission to laugh, even when times are difficult. Find that one moment that is funny regardless of the terrible big picture. Being friends with funny people can also help you overcome and forget your troubles.

 

Find your inner spirit

It’s a truth that in our darkest times we are willing to go the deepest. Amidst the turmoil in your life during the rough times, prayer and meditation can calm you down and make you feel that you are not alone. It makes no difference what your religious beliefs are. Prayer and meditation are merely forms of communication that connect you to your inner spirit and power. Once you do that, you realize you can get through anything. It gives you mental peace and strength to overcome your troubles.

“There is light at the end of every tunnel. Keep moving.” This difficult time of yours is like the dark tunnel and when it ends you will have happiness, you will have light. Time is the greatest cure for all the pains and sufferings. Bad things and situations arise for everyone, everywhere and we keep on asking ourselves that why it had to be me. But we deny to believe that there are people out there with a more tragic story and yet they are trying to live happily. So, appreciate what you have and move on. The time shall pass and the good days will surely come. Don’t just give up.
